The sheep industry in South Dakota has seen a trend develop in recent years where producers (new or existing) were seeking superior young ewe genetics but in smaller lot sizes. South Dakota Sheep Growers Association looked to meet the needs of this emerging market and saw it as opportunity to expand its role and reach within the state and regionally.
SDSGA is set to hold its 6th Annual Premium Yearling Ewe Sale July 27th, 2024. The SDSGA is looking for potential consignors of top-quality yearling ewes. The SDSGA Premium Yearling Ewe Sale is already an important regional sheep sale, impacting genetics for years to come. The sale will offer 500 head of top quality registered and commercial replacement ewes born from Jan 1, 2023 to Jan 1, 2024. The sale will consist mainly of white-face western ewes ~ including Rambouillet, Polypay & Targhee. Black-face ewes offered may include Hampshires & Suffolks. Please share the news of this sale with potential buyers across the region as it will provide a great opportunity for sheep producers and 4-H/FFA youth to acquire foundation genetics from reputable breeders to develop a high performing ewe flock. SDSU Extension will offer an educational program from 10 am ~ 12 pm, followed by a free lamb lunch and viewing of the ewes offered prior to the sale.
